In a video posted on the Capitol Hill Broadcasting Network, Holland and Knight education policy co-leader Scott Palmer talks to The Hill about the Supreme Court’s recent school desegregation ruling and how the decision will affect K-12 education policy.
It is interesting to note the dissenting opinion (supported by five justices) that there can be educational benefits to the promotion of diversity and the responsible use of 'Race Conscious' policies in schools.
Consider this assertion in tandem with the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (passed last November) which forbids schools to proffer 'preferential treatment,' in addition to discrimination, based on race.
It seems the legal system is moving to put an end to racial bias, without necessarily encouraging 'race blindness.'
The Supreme Court opinion suggests that it is possible and preferable for individuals and institutions to be Race Conscious.
I wonder what such a system would look like...
